In Case of EMERGENCY or Post-Operative Complications?
- Please call your dentist if: Swelling or pus at extraction site, fever, uncontrolled pain or excessive oral bleeding
- Please call your anesthesiologist if: Breathing problems, prolonged nose bleed, swelling or pain at IV site or vomiting that persists > 24 hours
PAIN After Surgery
- During the surgery, your child likely received IV Toradol® (ketorolac), a strong anti-inflammatory medication similar to Motrin® (ibuprofen).
- Do not give your child Motrin® for at least 4 hours after you leave the dental office.
- If you think your child is hurting, you may give Tylenol® (acetaminophen) anytime after you leave the dental office.
- You may alternate Tylenol® and Motrin® as indicated, which should be adequate to take care of your child’s pain.
- May give next dose of Motrin® after 4 hours following the completion of your child's procedure
BLEEDING From Surgery
- Gums may bleed from the dental work. For heavy bleeding apply direct pressure by biting on gauze for 20 minutes.
- Nose bleed may occur from the placement of the breathing tube. For heavy bleeding apply pressure. For continued bleeding call your anesthesia provider or seek urgent care.
DIET After Surgery
- Your child may drink/eat immediately.
- Softer foods may feel better on tender gums compared to hard, crunchy foods.
- No drinking through a straw or sippy cup (no sucking action) if extractions were done.
ACTIVITY
- Children commonly wake from anesthesia upset, confused and dizzy. Children during this stage may need to be held to avoid injury.
- Do not allow your child to run around and aggressively play for several hours after you return home.
- Encourage your child to relax when arriving home after dental surgery.
DENTAL Hygiene
- Resume brushing and flossing the night of your dental surgery.
- Establish a brushing and flossing routine that will ensure your child is brushing and flossing at least 2 times per day.
- Healthy snacks and beverages are crucial to a healthy mouth.
Most Common Side Effects
- Dizziness: from anesthesia medications
- Shivering: a normal reaction due to emerging from anesthesia
- Coughing & sore throat: from having a breathing tube (intubation)
- Snoring: from anesthesia medications. Anesthesia staff may lift chin to alleviate this. Your child’s breathing may seem louder than normal for a few days. If concerned call your anesthesia provider or take your child to the emergency department.
- Nausea & vomiting: slowly introduce clear liquids and progress to bland foods as tolerated. Keep your child hydrated.
- Swollen lips: moisturize lips to prevent chapping and/or cracking
- Gum irritation: keep area clean by brushing gently. Slight bleeding may occur and will resolve over time. It is very important to keep the gum area clean to allow proper healing and allow gums to settle over crowns.
